If I can give you a suggestion when done by abs t help your neck pain:
When “crunching”, focus your energy in keeping your lower back flat to the ground the entire time. It will send activation into your abs and out of your neck.
Avoid “whipping up” your crunches, and try to “lift” instead. You won’t go as high and that’s okay! Keep your crunches low and control the up AND down motion with your abs. As soon as you feel your neck gripping, take a second and readjust your form.
